This is Ascendancy, a wonderful strategy game from 1995. When you start the game you first must choose your alien race from the 21 differant races available.Each race has its own uniqe abilities and characteristics (my favorite are the Chamachies as they can reasearch technologies quickest). You must bring your race into the space age by reasearching differant technology trees and building strucyures like research labs, universities, and industrial structures. you can also form alliances, sign treaties, or declare war on other races as you come into contact with them. You can expand your empire by colonizing other planets and taking over other solar systems. If you like the X-Com games or Ogame then you'll love ascendancy.
